Finding your why

When you start something, it's important to know why you want to do it.

Before you market your work, you’ll need to know who you want to serve and why you want to do this. Flexibility and income are likely some of the reasons, but what makes it purposeful to you?

Ask yourself some questions. 

These reasons will make it easier to talk about your work with confidence. When you are speaking your truth, it’s very easy to connect to others who feel the same way. 

  • Who do you want to serve with your talents?
  • Why do you want to help them?
  • What do they need help with?
  • Why do you care about that?

Decide what motivates you. 

Feeling purpose can keep you motivated and excited about your work. Are you finding it hard to come up with an ideal customer? 

Explore these questions if you’re feeling unsure.

  • What do I care about?
  • What types of people do I like working with?
  • Who do I identify with? Can I help those people?
  • What have I achieved? Can I help others do it?
  • Do I know an industry really well? 
  • What problems do they have and how can I solve them?

Keep these in mind when deciding what projects you want to do. The answers are very helpful in setting up your profile, defining your brand, and marketing your work. People hire people who are seen as experts within a specific industry. Can you become an expert in a particular industry?

Make it connect to your client.

Once you have explored these ideas, consider writing a statement using some of the above answers as inspiration. Put this somewhere you can see when you need a boost or when you are talking to clients!

You know how [the problem]? 

I help [type of client] [solution] so they can [goal of your client]. 

In fact, [proof of your results].

I'm motivated by [reason].
